Mumbai: The city woke up to light showers and overcast skies on Friday morning, offering a brief yet refreshing break from the recent dry spell. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain activity in Mumbai and its surrounding districts is expected to continue over the next few days.
Mumbai Experiences Dip in Temperature
The light rains brought a noticeable drop in temperatures, with Mumbai recording a maximum temperature of 30.3°C on Thursday, around 4.4 degrees below the normal. This marks a significant dip compared to Wednesday’s 34.5°C, signaling a cool change for Mumbaikars as the month comes to an end.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Mumbai and Palghar
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts, warning of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The alert was first sounded at 7 a.m. on Friday, followed by another one at 10 a.m., both valid for three hours.
In Palghar district, authorities have advised residents to stay cautious as rain and thunderstorms could intensify later in the day.
Rainfall Data: Colaba and Santacruz Observatories Report Showers
After a dry Wednesday, Mumbai received intermittent rain from Thursday evening into Friday morning. As per IMD data, Santacruz observatory recorded 4 mm of rainfall, while Colaba coastal station registered 6.7 mm during this period.
Despite the Southwest Monsoon officially withdrawing on October 10, the city has witnessed unseasonal rainfall throughout the month, leading to what meteorologists describe as an “unusual October.”
Experts Explain the Reason Behind Unseasonal Showers
Meteorologists attribute the ongoing rain spells in Mumbai to a deep depression and a trough linked to an upper air cyclonic circulation associated with the system. These conditions have triggered widespread cloud formation and scattered showers across the Konkan region.
October Rainfall Above Normal Levels
This October, Colaba observatory recorded 165 mm of rainfall, which is 91 mm above the monthly average. Meanwhile, Santacruz received 71 mm, slightly below Colaba’s numbers but still notable for this time of year.
Experts say these figures mark one of Mumbai’s wettest Octobers in recent years, following the city’s historic early monsoon onset on May 26 and above-normal rainfall from June to September.
More Rain Expected in Early November
The IMD forecast indicates that light rain and thunderstorm activity may continue into early November, particularly in Mumbai and its neighboring districts. While heavy rain is unlikely, occasional showers and cloudy skies are expected to persist over the weekend.
