Vishal Malhotra, who made a memorable debut alongside Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao in Ishq Vishk, began his Bollywood journey with immense promise. But while the film turned into a breakthrough for its leading stars, Malhotra soon found himself struggling to fit into the narrow character space the industry offered him. What followed was an extraordinary phase of setbacks, smart decisions, and an unexpected reinvention that ultimately helped him script one of Bollywood’s most unique comeback stories.
A Promising Start With ‘Ishq Vishk’
Vishal Malhotra entered Bollywood with the 2003 hit Ishq Vishk, directed by Ken Ghosh. The film gave audiences three fresh faces, but it also revealed how limiting the industry could be. Despite his talent, Malhotra kept receiving the same type of roles—the hero’s loyal friend.
Whenever he asked filmmakers for more meaningful characters, the answer was simply “No.”
This narrow positioning slowly pushed him into a corner, even as his co-stars Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao continued to climb the Bollywood ladder.
How a Chance Encounter Shaped His Career
During a TEDx talk, Malhotra shared a surprising story about his early days. As reported by The Indian Express, he recalled bunking a class almost 30 years ago when a girl approached him and said they were looking for the face of a new channel. Without knowing anything about auditions, he showed up the next day—and landed the role.
This chance opportunity turned him into the face of Disney India for nearly a decade and later opened the doors to films like Jannat and Kismat Konnection.
A Clash With a Powerful Producer Changed Everything
As Vishal Malhotra tried to break free from supporting roles, he faced a major career setback. In an interview with Hindi Rush, he revealed how a disagreement with a powerful Bollywood producer led to unexpected consequences.
Malhotra said, “When I asked for a different role, that big producer took it on his ego. Its side effects were dangerous… I had no work for two years.”
This phase filled him with fear and uncertainty, leaving him without opportunities in the industry he had trusted.
Smart Investments Became His Lifeline
Even during his toughest period, the actor didn’t crumble. Vishal Malhotra credits his parents for teaching him financial discipline early on. After receiving his first paycheck, they encouraged him to invest in shares—advice that would later save him.
His mother had told him that these investments would help him buy a house within five years. This financial stability became Malhotra’s safety net when Bollywood turned its back on him.
Stepping Into Business and Reinventing His Career
When acting jobs slowed down, Malhotra decided to control his own destiny. He opened his own ad agency, created ad films, and even partnered with major Indian retailers. He shared that he sold everything from tissue paper to toilet rolls, building a stable business structure behind the scenes.
During this entrepreneurial phase, he stumbled upon NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). For Malhotra, NFTs represented creative freedom he never had in Bollywood. “NFTs gave the rights back to the creator,” he said—a concept that deeply resonated with him.
He soon became the first Indian actor to create and sell his own NFT.
Creating the World’s First NFT-Funded Film: ‘Ilm’
As COVID restrictions lifted, rumors spread about a possible cryptocurrency ban in India. Many advised Malhotra to sell his NFTs. He followed their advice—and the money he earned sparked a game-changing idea.
That amount was enough to fund a film he had written.
This led to Ilm, the world’s first feature film fully funded by NFTs. Vishal Malhotra wrote, produced, and directed it, marking a global milestone and proving that reinvention is possible at any stage of life.
A New Phase: Podcasts and Digital Influence
Today, Vishal Malhotra continues to reinvent himself. He runs an active YouTube channel where he hosts podcasts featuring personalities from Bollywood, business, politics, and other diverse fields. His journey—from Ishq Vishk to creating the world’s first NFT-funded film—stands as an inspiring reminder that Bollywood setbacks don’t define a career.
